As I mentioned in my previous post, I am now including a second video featuring exercises to loosen up the hips, which will help you better combine different types of kicks.
One of the biggest challenges when kicking—especially when performing a series of kicks—is maintaining balance. Many people lose their balance between kicks, or have to exert a great deal of effort to stay steady, which compromises both speed and power. For this reason, a key aspect of these exercises is to perform your kicks while lightly resting one hand (or sometimes both) on a barre; this makes it much easier to keep your leg elevated until you become accustomed to the movement. With a bit of practice, you will eventually be able to execute combinations of kicks without needing to hold onto the barre.
This video is intended for anyone who finds kicking difficult—and it will be especially useful for those who, due to age, may no longer be able to kick as they once did. These are the same exercises I currently use in my own training.
The video is just over 8 minutes long, but I recommend watching it to the end; I’ve included several demonstrations of breaking—ranging from one to four one-inch boards—performed using the lead leg, so you can see the results that these types of exercises can produce.
